If the density of the object is ½ the density of water, ½ the object is under water. If the density of the object is less than ½ the density of water, less than ½ the object is under water. If the density of the object is more than ½ the density of water, more than ½ the object is under water.

The greater the density, the greater the amount of the object which is under water.

The fraction that is under water is the same as the ratio of the densities.
Density of ice / Density of ocean = 920/1030
This is the fraction of the iceberg that lies below the surface of the ocean.

If you add steel washers to a floating Styrofoam cup, the bottom of the cup moves down. Steel is denser than the Styrofoam, so the density of the cup + washers has increased. When the top of the cup is even with the surface of the water, the density of the cup + washers is equal to the density of the water. When 90% of the cup is under water, the density of the cup + washers is 90% of the density of water.

The principal, that the fraction that is under water is the same as the ratio of the densities, is the logical result of the statements above.
