The text defines criticism as the process of evaluating a speech and rendering a judgment of its value. Some of the guidelines for effective criticism include: 1) Stress the positive. 2) Be specific. 3) Be objective and transcend your own bias as best you can. 4) Be constructive- use your criticism to help the speaker improve. 5) Focus on behavior- don’t try to read the mind of the speaker. 6) Own your comments and take responsibility for them. Members of individualist cultures may find public criticism easier and more acceptable than people from collectivist cultures.
