Could you potentially prevent a colony of perennial thistles from energizing their root system by removing leaves, or do the stalks themselves (on larger/taller plants) harvest energy from the sun as well? This isn't a homework question, it's for my own research. Thanks!

General rule is wherever there is green, there is photosynthesis taking place. If the stalk is green, photosynthesis is occurring, but optimally it occurs at the leaves.
