How did Solomon Asch conduct his classic experiment on group conformity? Why did many of the subjects in Solomon Asch's experiment give answers that they know to be incorrect?

What textbook are you using? I can probably use my sources to find the actual answer. Here's a video though that will explain the experiment well:

The experimenter arrives and tells you that the study in which you are about to participate concerns people's visual judgments. She places two cards before you. The card on the left contains one vertical line. The card on the right displays three lines of varying length.

The experimenter asks all of you, one at a time, to choose which of the three lines on the right card matches the length of the line on the left card. The task is repeated several times with different cards. On some occasions the other "subjects" unanimously choose the wrong line. It is clear to you that they are wrong, but they have all given the same answer.

What would you do? Would you go along with the majority opinion, or would you "stick to your guns" and trust your own eyes?

In 1951 social psychologist Solomon Asch devised this experiment to examine the extent to which pressure from other people could affect one's perceptions. In total, about one third of the subjects who were placed in this situation went along with the clearly erroneous majority.

Solomon Ash did a study where groups of people got together and looked at a standard line on a piece of paper and compared it to three other lines and had to determine which one was a match to the standard line.  One situation a group of 5 people looked at the cards only one person was the actual participant and the other 4 people where confederates of the experiment.  The first couple of rounds everybody was giving the correct answer and the other rounds the condegerates would purposly give the wrong answer to see if the participant would conform to the other peoples response or see if he would stand alone and stick to what they knew was the right answer.  Studies showed that when in the situation by yourself you are more likely to conform to those around you than when you have a partner that agrees with what you agree with.  When you have someone else that is on your side you have a longer chance of remaining confident in your answer than trying to go against a group standing alone
