Thomas found no data at Gatecliff rockshelter in Nevada because:
 
  a. The rockshelter had never been occupied by prehistoric populations.
  b. Archaeologists do not excavate data; they excavate objects that must then be observed to produce data.
  c. The site had been extensively looted prior to Thomas's investigations, and very little of it remained.
  d. A major flood had eroded the rockshelter sediments, and all the artifacts contained within the sediments, prior to Thomas's investigations.
  e. He was not looking for data, merely the interior measurements of the rockshelter with which to compare with other rockshelters in the area.
