How did Pasteur's theory overturn previously held assumptions regarding the nature of bacteria?
 
  A) Many thought bacteria was helpful to the human body to prevent illness.
  B) Most scientists thought that bacteria were useless organisms that had no impact upon the workings of the human body.
  C) Many scientists believed bacteria to be essential to the function of the liver and kidneys and that they were not inherently harmful.
  D) Most thought bacteria were the byproduct of deadly illnesses, not the cause.
  E) Most scientists believed this, but Pasteur proved it.
