What were Erasmus' beliefs about Christianity and paganism?
 
  A) Erasmus believed that Christianity and paganism could never be reconciled, although there was much to be gained from the ancient philosophers.
  B) Erasmus could not reconcile these divergent beliefs and felt that paganism served no purpose in Christian thought.
  C) Erasmus felt that Christianity should be replaced by the traditional pagan deities.
  D) Erasmus was uncertain how Christianity and paganism could merge, but he sought answers in the ancient texts.
  E) Erasmus joined Christianity with pagan wisdom as they were intrinsically linked, even considering Socrates a saint. This also required the purification of ancient writings pagan and Christian.
