How could architects increase the spaciousness and height of a building and reduce the thickness of the supporting walls?
 
  A) Barrel-vaulted ceilings seemed to work for the Gothic architect.
  B) They could not decrease the weight of the roof, but strengthen the foundation pillars.
  C) The thickness of the brick was lessened in the areas between arches to accommodate the increased size.
  D) They could lighten the weight of the ceiling and incorporate the use of stone pillars with arching ribs to deflect the weight of the ceiling.
  E) None of these
