Why could the West not sustain as well as the East against frontier invaders?

  A) The East did not have the level of foreign invaders that the West did, and therefore could sustain more easily.
  B) The centralized authority of the East allowed for a strong government and a strong military that solidified and consolidated power and promoted massive armies that could protect borders. The West was decentralized and made up of smaller military units that were not solidified or organized to protect the borders.
  C) The centralized authority of the East allowed for a strong government and a strong military that solidified and consolidated power and promoted massive armies that could protect borders. The West was smaller and could not compete and relied upon the East for help, which they would not provide.

  E) None of these
