What was purpose behind Augustus' decision to reign in the borders and cease expansion?

  A) Augustus was not a strong commander and wished to keep his Empire secure, and the citizens worshipping him as a deity.
  B) After the loss of a legion in German territory, Augustus vowed to never expand beyond Rome's current borders for safety.
  C) The Parthians were too strong to defeat. Therefore, Augustus determined that closing the borders and fending off invaders was the best choice for Empire.
  D) Augustus realized that the Empire was expansive and difficult to maintain at its current size. If he extended those borders, the Empire might destabilize and collapse due to the size of the army required to maintain it.
  E) The disbanded army was replaced with new soldiers that were not ready to fight difficult enemies like the Parthians, therefore, Augustus closed the borders.
