In the case of Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the Supreme Court ruled that
 
  a. southern states had to improve the quality of black schools to make them truly separate and equal.
  b. segregation was morally wrong, but that it was a matter for legislatures to address rather than the courts.
  c. separate educational facilities are inherently unequal and school districts should eliminate them with all deliberate speed.
  d. segregated schools violated the Fourteenth Amendment and must be closed.
