You determined that the proper ratio of packages of buns, packages of patties, and jars of pickles is 3:2:4. If you want to feed at least 300 people, but also maintain the proper ratio, what minimum number of packages of buns, packages of patties, and jars of pickles do you need, respectively?

300 x (3:2:4)

buns : patties : pickles
900 : 600 : 1200

without knowing the package size, or how much is in each package.

Work out how many you need for 300 people (assuming the ratio is per person)

300 x (3:2:4)

buns : patties : pickles
900 : 600 : 1200

Divide each one by the pakage size

packets of buns : packets of patties : jars of pickles
900 / 8 : 600 : 12 : 1200 / 18
= 112.5 : 50 : 66.666

The above numbers represent how many packages you will use, but if it is not a whole number you will obviously have to by the whole packet. So round the non-whole number up.

packets of buns : packets of patties : jars of pickles
113 : 50 : 67

x/3 = y/2 = z/4
x+y+z = 300
=>x = 300-y-z
(300-y-z)/3 = y/2
=>600-2y-2z = 3y
=>5y+2z = 600........(1)
y/2 = z/4
=>z = 2y.
=>5y+4y = 600
=>9y = 600
=>y = 67.......No. of patties
z = 133.....No. of jars of pickles
x = 100.....No. of packages of buns
