The male gametophyte grows from the microspore in all plant species. The microspore is a single cell that grows into a mature gametophyte with a reduced antheridium to generate  sperm nuclei in pollen producing species..

The microgametophyte's antheridia have been reduced to a single generative cell within the pollen grain
