Rationale: Chemotherapy destroys cells leading to the release of uric acid into the blood stream. The client is then at risk of experiencing uric acid nephropathy, renal stones, and acute renal failure. Allopurinol (Zyloprim), an antigout medication, is used with chemotherapy to prevent or treat this complication of therapy. It also may be used in mouthwash following fluorouracil (Adrucil) therapy to prevent stomatitis. Allopurinol is not used to treat nausea, diarrhea, or muscle spasms.
