A 6-year-old postoperative patient's IV has infiltrated and must be restarted immediately for medication. There is no time for placing local anaesthetic cream on the skin.

Complementary therapiesespecially guided imagery, relaxation techniques, and distractioncan reduce the anxiety associated with the anticipation of the procedure. Moderate sedation has its own side effects and possible complications and should not be used for quick procedures. Restraints are used only as a last resort and are not appropriate for an IV start. Drugs may not be used for quick procedures, such as a dressing change, an unexpected intravenous insertion, an injection, or venipuncture.
