C
When a client experiences acute inspiratory stridor with sternal retractions, it is an indication of respiratory distress. The nurse cannot replace the endotracheal tube and must be prepared to initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The surgeon or anesthesiologist should be notified immediately.
