1. The pH increased and the carbon dioxide decreased. The lack of carbon dioxide shifted the equilibrium so there was less acid potential increasing the pH.

2. With the second hyperventilation, there was a period where the breath was held and this was instrumental in retaining carbon dioxide to return the pH and carbon dioxide levels to normal.
