DNA replication in a newly discovered eukaryotic organism occurs about every 8 minutes. Its genome contains approximately 2.4 X 108 base pairs. Eukaryotic DNA polymerases synthesize DNA at a rate of approximately 40 nucleotides per second. Approximately how many origins of replication are required for this rate or replication?

At each origin of replication, DNA is replicated on both directions. That means, for each origin of replication there are 2 DNA polymerases.
Because of that, the replication rate that corresponds for each origin of rep. is 2*40=80 noucl/sec.

We assume that the total time of replication is 8 minutes= 8*60=480 seconds (although we are not told exactly how long the replication lasts).

So, if we assume that the replication stage lasts 8 minutes, then we need 480/80=6 origins of replication.
