Enzymes catalyze the reactions that comprise "metabolism." The change in Gibbs free energy is a measure of the spontaneity of a reaction in the given direction of reactant(s) Rightwards Arrow product(s). Spontaneous reactions have {\Delta}G < 0.

The flux rate and direction of flow of metabolites through a metabolic pathway is controlled in part by making sure key steps are essentially irreversible. The Gibbs free energy change for these reactions tend to be large and negative.

Enzymes catalyse reactions by lowering the activation energy needed for the process to take place, this in turn speeds up the reaction. Enzymes do not affect the standard free energy of the product.

Enzymes are biological catalysts which speed up the rate of reaction by providing the reaction with an alternative energy path with a lower activation energy.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. – Winston Churchill
