ATP is a molecule that "stores" energy.  PPi is pyrophosphate.  PPi is cleaved from ATP to yield AMP, and this cleavage releases a lot of energy.  So much energy is released that it actually drives chemical reactions forward, and these reactions are irreversible.  To drive a reaction in the direction opposite of the PPi-driven reaction, energy must be inputted.
