Definition for Orotate

From Biology Forums Dictionary

Occurring in biosynthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides, orotate (or orotic acid) arises from the cyclization and subsequent oxidation of N-carbamoylaspartate (the product of the aspartate transcarbamoylase [ATCase] reaction). Orotate is equivalent to 6-carboxyuracil. The cyclization reaction is catalyzed by dihydroorotase, and the resulting cyclic product, dihyroorotate, is reduced bty the NAD+-dependent enzyme dihyrdoorotate dehydrogenase.
