CHE 415 Unit Operations II Leader:
Professor: Reporter:
Group #2: Lab#3: Steam to water Inspector
Objective:
The major objective of this experiment is to determine the length of heat exchanger of steam to water via heat exchanger. The heat energy is transferred from hot steam to water with constant pressure. At the same time, it can determine the viscosity and the thermal conductivity for each pipe as well.
Task to be performed:
The group leader will run the experiment
The inspector will look at environmental and safety concerns during the experiment, use of the equipment in an industrial setting and making recommendations for improvement.
The data reporter will measure and record all data to perform calculations from the experiment.
Design method:
Heat transfer units that use steam to produce hot water are known as indirect heaters. Usually, the flowrate of hot steam will be keeping at constant, but the flowrate for water will be increasing in different increments. The flow direction of steam and water is opposition direction. Therefore, the temperatures of inlet and outlet will record. Since the diameters of all tubes are known, it can use steam tables in order to figure out the density, viscosity and thermal conductivity as well. These data can be determined the heat transfer coefficient.
