Auberson Mallory Auberson Ashley McGowan Introduction Into Psychology 9/19/2019 Part One In many cases the diagnosis of ADHD is complicated. Twelve-year-old Alex McCarty is one of those cases. His parents, Diane and Tim McCarty, were first concerned about Alex's depressed attitude. His mother began to worry that it was more than just a case of pre-adolescent moodiness. Alex presented with depression. He was put on antidepressants and while on his medication, Alex attempted suicide. However, after his medication dosage was increased he stopped having those thoughts, but his problems at school continued. I believe that Alex is depressed because he thinks his life is worthless. For a young child to state “I was worried about what kind of future I was going to have. Whether I was going to have a good job or live behind a dumpster.” The problem here is that Alex being made fun of everyday is just confirming to him, in his mind, that he has no worth. Alex seems like such a sweet and intelligent boy. I think that he does have some deeper-rooted issues. However, it all starts and ends with the bullying as far as his depression goes. Part Two I would like to ask Alex why he feels like he is depressed. I want to hear his opinion on what goes on in his everyday life that makes him feel like he doesn’t know what kind of future he is going to have. I would also like to ask Alex what makes him happy. Just by watching him, I can tell that he feels different. He knows he isn’t like every other kid. I want to know from him what makes him feel like he is just a normal child, despite all of the obstacles he faces everyday. Next I would ask Alex if he has had any recent thoughts of suicide. Even though in the documentary after Alex started his new medicine he hasn’t had any suicidal thoughts, I would still want to know. I would follow up this question with the question of, why are you having these suicidal thoughts? Although, Alex tells us that he gets bullied a lot in school, there could be other or new leading causes to him feeling suicidal. I would then move onto the parents. I would start off by asking, how is Alex’s energy on a day to day basis?. Is he willing to get out of the house and try new things? I would want to know this because upon further research I have done after watching this video, I have noticed low energy being a sign of depression. I would then go on to ask, how is Alex sleeping at night? What time does he go to bed? Do you notice him staying up really late after you thought he was in bed asleep? I would want to know about his sleeping schedule for a couple of reasons. If Alex is having a hard time sleeping is a sign of depression also. I know asking some of these questions seem redundant because Alex’s doctors have already diagnosed him with depression. However, by asking as many questions as possible can allow you to see how far Alex’s depression goes. It can also give his family more insight on how to treat his depression. The last people I would want to ask questions from is Alex’s teachers. Questions such as, do you notice Alex getting made fun of in class? I would want to know if the teachers are paying attention to their students, and how they are behaving. Have you noticed Alex being alone a lot? Alex isolating himself from other students is a sign of bullying, and can actually make the bullying worse. If you have noticed the bullying being done to Alex, have you talked to the children behind it? Have you contacted their parents? Bullying is something schools face every single day. It is nothing new that teachers are having to deal with. I would want to know these particular questions because if it is being done to Alex, there is a good chance it is being done to someone else. Talking to the bully’s can sometimes fix the situation. Mock Interview Interviewer: Alex what makes you feel happy? Alex: “My family and playing video games.” Interviewer: What makes you feel depressed and sad? Alex “When kids as school call me names and I thought that we were friends.” Interviewer: What was going through your head when you attemted suicide? Alex “I just wanted to end my life, I just wanted to get it over with.” Interviewer: When you started to concentrate better in school, how did that make you feel? Alex “ I started to do better in math and that made me feel better about myself.” Interviewer: “What makes you feel different from other children?” Alex: “I can’t focus a lot of the times and that makes me depressed.” Results The mock interview above are questions I would want to ask Alex along with questions I have pulled from research. The answers to these questions are things I have pulled from the video that Alex has said and things I think he would say. Based on the interview I think that all Alex really wants is to be able to focus. I don’t think Alex wants his life to end. I think that Alex wants to make friends and find joy in school the same way he does video games. Alex seems like a very sweet boy who wants to do good in school. I think based upon research that part of the issues Alex is dealing with will get better with time. Lastly I have never done research on things like ADHD and depression. I am so saddened watching a twelve year old boy say things like he just wanted to get his life over with. If there is anything I would want Alex to know is that everything is going to be okay. He is not the only kid that suffers with the things he is in this moment of his life. The questions I would like to ask the experts start off with asking about the medications. The older that these children get do they continue to interview them about their depression? Do they think that the medications they are being prescribed will ever be given in lower doses? I wonder this because some of Alex’s depression resulted in bullying. I would want to know what would happen if the bullying stopped and some symptoms of his depression went away. I think many people are confused with the label of ADHD. Many people think that it is just a super hyper kid, when it is much more than that. These children are having issues in schools because of their diagnosis. Some questions I think that people need answered are, do kids really grow out of ADHD? I know as I have researched some parents have said their child just grew out of it. I think another one is, how do we teach children in school to accept and not bully children with ADHD? I think it’s important for kids to understand the difficulties these children face with this diagnosis and it is important to always be kind to the.
