Note that ammonia gas is produced during the reaction and usually can be detected during the reflux of the benzonitrile with the sodium hydroxide solution
Purpose: To create benzoic acid by hydrolyzing a nitrile in basic and acidic conditions and to compare if the reaction is a better reaction than the Grignard reaction.
Chem Rxn is …
Background: Another way to make benzoic acid with amine involved is hydrolyzing a nitrile. Hydrolysis of Nitriles can occur under acidic and/or basic condition. In this reaction the basic condition would make the benzonitirle turn into an amide and the acidic condition would turn the amide into benzoic acid. The first part of the reaction is to heat the nitrile with sodium hydroxide under refluxation. The hydroxide group would add to the benzonitirle with heat as a catalyst. Then during refluxing the nitrogen would protonate from the water and make it more electrophilic and after rearrangements and deprotonations ammonia gas will be released because it will become a good leaving group. In the acidic condition, the reaction has be under cool temps when acid is being added. The oxygen is protonated from the hydrochloride and becomes benzoic acid.
Methods: IR spectra, recrystallization, melting point, vacuum filtration, refluxing.

Questions:
It was important to not have any source of water in the reaction because they would protonate the reagents and you would not get an organometallic product.
Letting the dry ice sit would allow water particles to float around that could put moisture in the gringard reagent. The by-product would be Mg(OH)Br

Discussion
The results from the diels alder reaction was a 70.0% yield and a measured melting point of 149-152 C. Based on these the results the reaction partially worked in terms that there was a decent yield but the melting point was in a much lower range than expected. The reaction was very reactive because the diene was in a locked cis-confirmation. The IR spectra did show –CH stretching at 2980cm-1, an acid anhydride at 1764 and carbonyl group at 1087cm-1. This does not clearly indicate the reaction is purely cis-Norborenene-5,6-endo-dicarboxylic anhydride but it does should functional groups of that compound. Also, dicylceopentadiene could not have been produced because the IR spectra does show a carbonyl group and even 1 oxygen would declare dicylceopentadiene as not the product. Using melting point was supposed to confirm the purity of the product but it was about 10 degrees lower that the literature melting point. This means the product was not pure and there was error within reaction. Though, the melting point was low, the yield and the IR spectra results were decent.
An error in the reaction was possibly due to the separation being oncorrect. Some of the ligroin or ethyl acetate could of transferred in the crystals and made the melting point lower than it should. Having the impurities could of result in a much higher yield than calculated. Therefore, making sure the ethyl acetate dissolved the maleic anhydride and ligroin all the way is important to make sure the compound is pure which of made recrystallization better so the incorrect solvent wouldn’t have crystallized.. Another error as to why the melting point was lower was mabe cis-Norborenene-5,6-endo-dicarboxylic anhydride was an exo product meaning less steric hindrance but a lower melting point. The product that could have been made is Cis-5-Norborenene-2,3-exo-dicarboxylic anhydride and its’ melting point is 142-146C. This is a lower melting point and so it was possible for the product to turn out exo instead of endo. Lastly, the melting point could have been too low because after leaving the crystals out to dry at night it still could have been not dry. The chunks of the crystals that was placed in the crystals were bunched meaning water could have been inside still. Therefore spreading out the product on a watch glass to dry would have been a better option to get a higher melting point.
