Jenafer Strange DEV2004 Dr. Clement January 31, 2018 Chapter 2 Summary Chapter two goes over heredity and prenatal development. The difference between heredity and prenatal is quite large. Heredity is passed down from one generation to the next. Everyone has 46 chromosomes, which are turned into 23 pairs, these are traits are heredity. There are a few chromosomal abnormalities that can very well be heredity, such as down syndrome. Which is an extra chromosome on gene pair 21. A few more genetic disorders include Tay-Sachs disease, Huntington’s disease, sickle-cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and phenylketonuria (PKU). Influences of the environment on development plays a huge part in a person’s life. Genotypes are traits we inherit from our parents, but when we add an environmental factor into it this is now called a phenotype. Adopted children are more likely to act like there parent, especially in certain environments. Conception is when a sperm finds the egg in the fallopian tube and starts corresponding chromosomes inside the egg. They now have created 23 new pairs of unique genes. There are a couple other ways of getting pregnant or simply being a mother such as, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF), surrogacy or adoption. During prenatal development is the time to take everything seriously. While in the germinal stage, this is when conception happens, then once implanted onto the uterine wall it will start nourishing off the mother. The embryotic stage is from implantation until two months. During this stage major organs start developing, kidneys have formed and are working, the liver is producing red blood cells and the heart beats in the first month. The fetal stage is when the fetus begins to fully develop its organs, start to gain in size and weight. Taking any kind of drug will put the fetus at risk of birth defects or stillbirth. Even smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and coffee is harmful to your unborn child.
