Assignment #1 (20 Points) Scientific Method Name: Francis Scott Key III, 02274322 Directions: Type your answers directly on this sheet in the space provided after each question. Please either highlight your answer or type them in RED font. Upload you Assignment as a .doc, .docx or .rtf file when you are finished. Introduction If you have not already, you or someone you know will try to grow a various plants either inside your house or outside in a garden. What type of soil do you need? How often should you water them? Should you plant them in full sun? Why do some plants need less water and some more? These are questions that many people have about plants. In this activity, you will have a chance to manipulate different variables to see how much water some plants use and how much some lose through transpiration. Directions Go to: http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/dl/free/0078695104/383946/BL_10.html Read the Purpose and Objectives Read and follow the information under Procedures and complete the lab for all 4 plants and all 3 variables. Reset the lab and complete the lab for the next set of 4 plants and 3 variables. You are testing a total of 8 plants. Record your information in the Results Table provided on this sheet. During and after the lab, answer the following questions. Type all answers directly on the data sheet. Select Save As, and use your last name and student ID as a file name. Upload the data sheet as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file when finished. Results Table 5 points ***You should include data for 8 different plants. You will have to hit the reset button (in the upper right corner) to receive 4 more plants.*** Amount of water transpired after 1 hour (mL) Plant Normal Fan Heater Lamp Coleus .9 6.0 3.9 3.0 Rubber Plant 4.9 8.4 6.8 4.3 Zebra Plant 4.2 7.6 6.1 3.2 Arrow Head 3.6 7.5 6.6 4.0 English Ivy 1.8 5.1 3.2 2.1 Devils Ivy 2.9 4.6 4.1 3.0 Geranium 1.2 1.7 5.8 2.4 Dieffembachia 4.1 7.7 6.0 3.9 Questions 1 – 10 are short answer questions and should be answered in 2 to 3 words or 1 to 2 complete sentences. Each question is worth 1 point for a total of 10 points. What are the three different variables that you tested? a. wind, fan, heater State your question. Which variable will transpire more water? State your hypothesis. I believe the fan transpired more water due to the all the variables that can go along with the wind blowing and how hard the wind can blow Describe the process of transpiration? Moisture is carried through plants from roots to the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and then released into the atmosphere .  5. What environmental factors that you tested increased the rate of transpiration? Was the rate of transpiration increased for all plants tested? a. All environmental factors increased the rate of transpiration b. yes Did any of the environmental factors (heat, light, or wind) increase the transpiration rate more than the others? Why? a. Wind b. wind blew water off the plants and removes moisture faster when you factor in all of the other elements Which species of plants that you tested had the highest transpiration rates? Why do you think different species of plants transpire at different rates? a. Rubber Plant, Arrowhead, Dieffenbachia What is your conclusion? All plants transpire at different rates and some variables allow plants to transpire at faster rates Did your results support your hypothesis? No State another question about transpiration or other plants that you would like to have answered that you did not answer in this lab. Why doesn’t the heater and lamp transpire water in the same amounts Question 11 is an extended response question and should be at least 100 words. Total: 5 points You want to reduce the amount of money that you are spending at the grocery store. You and your family decide to plant a small garden to provide a variety of foods. Skim through this article http://www.newsweek.com/2015/10/30/feed-humankind-we-need-farms-future-today-385933.html for a neat perspective on the future of agriculture. What are some methods that you would implement into your garden? What would you try to avoid? Make sure you explain your answer fully. I would build a green house and use technology like hydroponics. I will be able to grow fruits and vegetables without having to worry about the weeds with a green house. Also inside the green house I could use different types of light such as blue lights are red which the plants absorb better than the outside light they use in their natural environment. I am able to control all of the conditions if I use a green house. (I can add more light to the plants or take away light for example) I would avoid the stacking method due to the challenges of getting sufficient light to all the plants to keeping pests and disease out of the crops to make sure they grow properly.
