Giovanni Schiaparelli examined Mars through a 20-cm (8-in.) diameter
telescope, the same size used by many amateur
astronomers today. His drawings of the red planet showed
features perceived by Percival Lowell and others as irrigation
canals. Higher-resolution images from Earth and spacecraft
visiting Mars failed to show the same features
