Responses to Speech Sounds

Description
Results of PET scans indicate the regions of the superior temporal lobe that respond to speech sounds. Red: Regions that responded to phonetic information (normal speech sounds or a computerized transformation speech that preserved the complexity of the speech sounds but rendered it unintelligible). Orange: Region that responded to intelligible speech (normal speech sounds or a computerized transformation that removed most normal frequencies but preserved intelligibility). (Based on data from Scott et al., 2000.)
