Description
Chinese workers on a railway in the far West. “Without them,” Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific Railroad said, “it would be impossible to complete the western portion of this great national highway.” Some Chinese workers were drawn from the gold fields farther north, and others were imported from China, under five-year contracts with the railroads, which paid them $10 or $12 a month.
