Shown here are the active sites of the (yellow) and (blue) subunits, the interconnecting 25 Å tunnel filled with indole molecules, and the routes of substrate entry and product release for both subunits, with the covering “lids,” whose alternate opening and closing restrains indole within the tunnel.

Shown also are a binding site for the catalytically essential and a salt bridge known to provide allosteric linkage between the two subunits.
