Garden Vista, Villa of Livia at Primaporta

Description
Near Rome. Late 1st century BCE. Museo Nazionale Romano, Rome.

In the Villa of the Mysteries at Pompeii, murals depict initiation rites into the cult of Bacchus.
By using a kind of intuitive perspective, the artists have created a general impression of real space beyond the wall.

The late first-century BCE paintings on the dining-room walls of Livia's villa at Primaporta, exemplify yet another approach to creating a sense of expanded space with murals.
The painters used atmospheric perspective, where the world becomes progressively less distinct as it recedes into the distance.
