Simplified diagram of hemodialysis.

Description
The dialyzer is composed of many strands of very thin, sievelike tubing. In the dialyzer, blood within the dialysis tubing and dialysis fluid bathing the tubing move in opposite directions (a countercurrent). The dialyzer thus provides a large surface area for diffusion of waste products out of the blood and into the dialysis fluid.
