Hong Kong is a strange situation. A British colony since 1842, it was handed back to China in 1997 as a “special administrative region” with internal self-governance for 50 years. China, however, behind the scenes exercises great influence. Beijing especially disliked the growth of Hong Kong democracy and limited voting to an election committee of 1,200 hand-picked Hong Kongers (out of a population of 7 million) who were beholden to Beijing for their wealth….
