Tshibumba Kanda Matulu Tombeau Sans Cercueil (Tomb Without a Coffin)

Description
ca. 1974. Canvas (recycled flour sack), paint, wood, and staples, 39.2 × 60.2″ (99.5 × 152.9 cm).

Painting

Political subjects reigned over independence-era paintings. Tombeau sans cerceuil shows a hero figure of Congolese independence, Patrice Lumumba, who had been assassinated four months into office. Here, he appears as a Christlike figure.
