Autonomic nerves and their effects

Description
Autonomic signals travel to organs by a two-neuron path. The first neuron has its cell body in the brain or spinal region (indicated in red in the two body sketches). This neuron synapses on a second neuron at a ganglion. Sympathetic ganglia are close to the spinal cord. Parasympathetic ganglia are in or near the organs they affect. Axons of the second neuron in the pathway synapse with the organ.
