Aggression among SEA ANEMONES and STONY CORALS
Aggression among SEA ANEMONES and STONY CORALS
Like the sea anemones, stony corals, and many organisms, there is a constant competition between organisms for space. In particular, the sea anemones and stony corals.

Acontia are free filaments of the inner most edges of septa that divide the gastrovascular cavity of sea anemones and corals, and they serve the ultimate pruprose of increasing surface area for digestion.

Stony Corals world!
Stony Corals world!
These Cnidarians from the Anthozoa Class are colonial organisms, and only have polyps. No medusa- jelly fish like stage. They are remarkable because they have calcium carbonate skeletons which differentiates them from sea anemones. This stony skeleton secreted by the epidermis cells, serves for protection and support, and it covers the entire organism. The stony corals looks exactly

Octocorals World!
Octocorals World!
Octocorals are belong to the phylum cnidarians and to the class Anthozoa.

They are marina organisms, with the polyp stage. They are simlar to stony corals in that they have a skeleton but a rather internal one, kind of like vertebrates. But it is a non-living skeleton.
They have tentacles like feathers because they have side branches to one side only.

TYPES of CORAL REEFS
TYPES of CORAL REEFS
Beautiful coral reefs are tropical, and grow in warm waters that are shallow.
They are filled with calcareous structures because stony corals are the main constituents of coral reefs, but they include algae, plants, and many organisms. They are like a biome all in itself.
They support a wide variety of animals and plants that inhabit these structures.

Phylum Ctenophora
Phylum Ctenophora
Said to be related to Cnidarians

Also known as combjellies, gooseberries, sea walnuts.

Marine, triploblastic, coastal or oceanic, pelagic, with symmetry similar to cnidarians with oral and aboral ends known as radial symmetry. It also like the cnidarians, has a large amount of mesoglea that covers the body wall and tentacles. However, since it is a triploblas

The ectoderm gave rise to inner lining of digestive tube, and respiratory system.
The mesoderm was responsible for the key developme

Sponge taxonomy and reproduction
There are 4 classes of Sponges:

1- Calcarea: Like leucosolenia and grantia or scypha. It houses sponges of all 3 types of body designs, shallow water, marine, and small sponges. More importantly, they all seem to have calcaerous spicules out of calcium carbonate. Leucosolenia species are of the asconoid body design, and live in clusters. Granitia is of the syconoid body

PCR summary
PCR summary
Polymerase chain reaction is a method that was developed in 1985.
The main aim of this method was to take small pieces od DNA and magnify them to analyze them.
Without the special DNA polymerase used, this method could not have been developed. It uses DNA polymerase from a bacterial source called Thermophilus aquaticus, and it is a thermophilic bacteria that survive under

Centrifugation Techniques Summary
There are 4 different Centrifugation techniques available, and each has its separate applications and characteristics.

  • Top Bench Centrifuge
Centrifuging on a bench. Commonly used to centrifuge a sample with cells. The cells collect and pellet at the bottom of the erlenmyer tube, and the supernatant which may be the cellular debris collects above.

Different types of electrophoresis- Summary
There are 3 types of Electrophoresis:

  • Agarose Gel
Used to separate either DNA or RNA fragments
In DNA, the denaturation buffer used is sodium hydroxide, and the staining chemical is ethydium bromide.
In RNA, formaldeyhde is used to prevent the formation of loops, as well as a denaturation agent. And methylene blue is used to stain.

Chapter 14:  Mendel and the Gene Idea

One possible explanation for heredity is a “blending” hypothesis =>
mixing of traits (blue and yellow = green).
•   Will eventually give rise to a uniform population of individuals.
•   Breeding experiments do not support it.
An alternative model is “particulate” inheritance => genetic material contributed b

Any suggestions about where to look for research?
Hi!  I am really enjoying this site--so many interesting, bright people with lots of wonderful information!  So, I am doing a research project with a group for my physiology class--we came up with a very general hypothesis--along the lines of how age/gender will affect heart rate after each subject is asked to list of a short list of items they must repeat back.
