Computer-assisted diet-assessment tools have the major advantage that they can save time and provide greater accuracy than a manual assessment of diet adequacy. Many dental operatories have chairside computers making it convenient to access these programs. However, these programs are not specific to dentistry and, therefore, do not address issues such as the cariogenic potential of dietary patterns. Additionally, these programs do not address overall nutritional status as they only provide a snapshot into the patient's dietary intake over a limited period of time.
