If a woman is at risk for thrombus, and is not ready to ambulate, nurses might intervene in all of the following except:

  1. put her in TED hose and/or SCD boots.
  2. flex, extend, and rotate her feet, ankles, and legs.
  3. sit her in a chair.
  4. notify the doctor immediately if there is a positive Homans sign.

1. Incorrect. Antiembolic stockings (TED hose) and sequential compression device (SCD) boots are recommended. Just sitting in a chair won't help.
2. Incorrect. Bed exercises like these are useful. Just sitting in a chair won't help.
3. Correct. Sitting immobile in a chair will not help. Bed exercise and prophylactic footwear might.
4. Incorrect. A positive Homans sign (calf muscle pain or warmth, redness, or tenderness) needs the doctor's immediate attention.
