1 mmol of benzoic acid reacted with 1 mmol of dipentylamine to give the salt shown. No dipentylamine was left. In part b, 10 times the amount of dipentylamine was used. From Part VI, students know that diisobutylamine is not soluble in water and can therefore infer that dipentylamine is not soluble in water. The amine that did not react with the benzoic acid appears as a separate layer.
