Commonly consists of synthetic estrogen and progestin in a combination that prevents ovulation by suppressing the release of pituitary gonadotrophic hormones that regulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles and ovulation. These hormones also induce changes in the cervical mucus and in the endometrial lining to prevent implantation. Side effects include blood hypercoagulability due to increased synthesis of coagulation factors and hypertension secondary to increased synthesis of angiotensinogen.
