(Answer to question 1 )  Because almost all of it occurs below sea level.

(Answer to question 2 )  

The west coast is an active margin of the North American plate; from Northern California northward is
a convergent margin. The east coast is a passive margin.



(Answer to question 3 )  

Volcanoes are located on convergent or divergent plate boundaries. Places within plates may
experience volcanism if they are over a hot spot.
