were working on balancing equations in chemistry right now and im a little confused

here is an example:

why is this:  NH3+NO-----> N2+H2O

balanced like this:  4NH3+6NO----> 5N2+6H2O  ?

The idea is to make sure there are the same quantity of each element on both sides of the equation.  That is to say there are 10 Nitrogen, 6 Oxygen, and 12 Hydrogen atoms in the molecules of the reactants and 10 Nitrogen, 6 Oxygen, and 12 Hydrogen atoms in the products.
