for "chemical" reactions...

1) conservation of mass.  ie.. mass reactants = mass products
2) number of atoms of any given element is the same on both sides of the equation.  you could also say, the number of moles of atoms of any given element is the same on both sides.
3) # electrons is the same on both sides of an equation.  this applies to redox reactions particularly.  if something gains 2 electrons, something must lose 2 electrons.. ok?
