The common red fox has 34 chromosomes in its somatic cells, but the arctic fox has 52.
They can be crossed to yield a hybrid form. How many chromosomes would you expect to find in the somatic cells of the hybrid fox?

Possible Answers (since this is a multiple choice question):
A.  13         B. 17         C.  26            D.  34            E.  43            AB.  52       AC.  86

I would say 34. This is because the chromosomes have to pair during fertilization. I suppose it just so happens both fox species have 34 chromosomes which can successfully pair. The 18 extra chromosomes from the arctic fox never pair in the hybrid.

There will be 17 chromosomes in the gamete from the red fox and 26 chromosomes in the gamete of the arctic fox, so the hybrid will have 43 chromosomes.
