Diploid is a word used to describe a cell with two sets of DNA (a somatic cell), one inherited from the mother and one inherited from the father. In humans, we have 46 chromosomes, 23 originally from the egg and 23 from the sperm. Haploid is a word used to describe any sex cell (gamete). A sex cell has half the number of chromosomes a somatic cell would contain. When living things produce sex cells, the number of chromosomes must be cut in half, so that when two sex cells combine to form a zygote (a fertilized cell), the number of chromosomes returns back to normal, diploid. If this doesn't happen, the offspring will have double the number of chromosomes in their adult life, which leads to a failure to survive.
