1 -- Chronic pyelonephritis involves chronic inflammation and scarring of the tubules and interstitial tissues of the kidney. It is a common cause of chronic renal failure. Cystitis may cause acute pyelonephritis and acute renal failure. Renal calculi are generally caused by dietary intake and not by chronic pyelonephritis.
