DMMs are the "right way round" i.e. red to anode and black to cathode for forward biasing a diode whereas analogue meters are the other way around. If you are testing a lot of diodes with an analogue meter it's sometimes more convenient to swap the leads over at the meter terminals before you start.

If ohmmeter probes apply forward bias to diode under test, it shows small resistance varying from 1k to 100 ohm.
If ohmmeter probes apply reverse  bias to diode under test, it shows very high resistance varying from 1Mohm to infinitive.
Forward bias connection: Positive probe to anode of diode, negative probe to cathode of diode.
Remark: old type moving pointer ohmmeter RED probe carries Negative.
DVM ohmmeter RED probe carries Positive.
