I've heard that success in calculus and differential equations isn't enough to determine whether you'll succeed as a math major. Do you think that someone who was conceptually okay with linear algebra will be successful?

Yes because you'll use linear algebra in most of my higher math courses. But, I don't think a specific course will let you know if you'll be successful as a math major. It depends on if you enjoy math and if you do fairly well at it or are willing to try. Once you keep taking higher math courses and do well in them and ENJOY them, then I think you'll succeed.

Not necessarily, but it's a good sign.  Linear algebra is usually the first class you take in abstract math (and really, the only abstract part of it is proofs involving vector spaces, but still...).  Since most math after that will be proof-based, it is good to have a knack for the more abstract side of math.
