r1=4+- 0.2 and r2=4+-0.3....[read as 4 plus or minus o.2 and 4 plus or minus 0.5 respectively]

so....what is the equiv. resistance in series and parallel?
heyy..I know the formulas...I just cant arrive at the correct answer.
temme how you worked it out.

In series it would be:

8 +- 0.5

In parallel it would be:

2 +- 0.13

If you want a detailed explanation send me an e-mail.

The  + and - are resistance tolerances.
The general formula is:
When in series:   Rt = R1 +R2 +R3+.......
When in Parallel: Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3+....
You solve the total resistance. If you want to consider the tolerance:
R1 = 4.2 and 3.8  and ......  you know the next.

Series, resistors add, and the tolerance adds also

R = 4 + 4 = 8
Rhi = 4.2 + 4.3 = 8.5
Rlo = 3.8 + 3.7 = 7.5
R = 8 ± 0.5

parallel

R = 4/2 = 2
Rhi = 4.2*4.3/(4.2+4.3) = 2.12
Rlo = 3.8*3.7/(3.8+3.7) = 1.87
R = 2 ± 0.12
