The Congo Crisis (1960-1965) was a period of turmoil in the First Republic of the Congo that began with national independence from Belgium and ended with the seizing of power by Joseph Mobutu. The conflict concluded five years later with a united Congo emerging under the dictatorship of Joseph-Désiré Mobutu.
